Contribute Vietnamese-Edmonton records to the City of Edmonton Archives
Chúng Ta Cùng Nhau is thrilled to partner with the City of Edmonton Archives to support the inclusion and increase in Vietnamese-Edmonton representation within official City of Edmonton records.
If you are a Vietnamese-Edmonton, organization or resident, the City of Edmonton Archives would love donations of organizational or personal/family records.
WHAT IS THE CITY OF EDMONTON ARCHIVES?
The City of Edmonton Archives collects, preserves, and provides access to records that tell the story of Edmonton and the communities and people who live here.
While the Vietnamese community has a long-standing history in Edmonton, there are no official records currently housed in the City of Edmonton Archives.
Chúng Ta Cùng Nhau is eager to help change that.
Increasing Vietnamese-Edmonton historical records directly supports several of our organization’s key goals including Heritage and Preservation, increased Representation, and building a digital archive of Vietnamese-Canadian stories, histories, and cultural materials. Chúng Ta Cùng Nhau is committed to preserving Vietnamese culture, language, and traditions, while also recognizing how these evolve within the diaspora.
Chúng Ta Cùng Nhau co-founders Linda Hoang and Jessica Truong met with community archivist Jia Jia Yong for a tour of the archives and to learn more about Jia Jia’s important efforts to increase the diversity of the city’s community records.
Jia Jia’s work supports the preservation of the documentary heritage of local families and businesses in Edmonton, and develops greater representation of all communities in our city's history. These records would be stored and always made accessible for the future.
We encourage the Vietnamese-Edmonton community to reach out to Jia Jia directly and submit personal or organizational records to be preserved.

WHAT ARE PERSONAL RECORDS?
Every person has a legacy and a story to tell for future generations. These stories are found in records that document a person’s or a family’s experiences and enduring memories. We all create and collect a variety of records (paper and digital or electronic) throughout our lives. These records show the things we do, what we value, or what we want to remember.
Your personal or family records could be preserved at the City of Edmonton Archives.
Personal records may include vital records like birth or marriage certificates, education records like school correspondence, awards, and school work, employment records, creative records like art, legal records like wills or contracts, financial records like personal budgets or mortgage documents, correspondence like family or personal letters, postcards, personal writing like journals or memoirs, community involvement or volunteer work, committee reports, interests and activities like recipe collection, sports awards or photos, religious records, photographs and scrapbooks, photo albums, oral history interviews, home videos, genealogical records like family trees or histories and more!
WHAT ARE ORGANIZATIONAL RECORDS?
Organizational records are documents in all formats (paper and electronic or digital) that are created or received by your organization. These records help us understand what the organization does or has done. Some records have legal importance and some are for financial accountability. Other records document events, people, and work of the organization. Organizational records can be placed at an archives for long-term preservation.
Organizational records may include documentary items like organization history, photographs, news clipping, event calendars, schedules, legal items like bylaws, policies, contracts, administrative items like meeting minutes, annual reports, newsletters, correspondence, promotional materials, list of members, financial items like financial statements, general ledgers, budgets and more.
Chúng Ta Cùng Nhau plans to continue collaborations with the City of Edmonton Archives including co-hosting events in ongoing efforts to foster belonging, preserve heritage, and build Vietnamese-Canadian identity.
Stay tuned for more details and please reach out to Jia Jia and the City of Edmonton Archives directly for any questions about submitting your records or booking a tour of the City of Edmonton Archives.
